Inmates back in cells after lockdown

EDMONTON, CANADA - All inmates have returned to their cells at the Edmonton Institution after 10 prisoners were wounded in a fiery gang-related melee that destroyed two small buildings in the prison. Assistant Warden Daren Frick said one of the inmates was shot by a guard, seven were stabbed and two suffered other injuries.

Frick said the maximum-security facility remains locked down with inmates confined to their cells 23 hours per day. Corrections officials would not say what sparked the fight Tuesday that saw up to 40 inmates take control of the prison yard until an emergency response team forced them to give up. Read more.
