Probe faults parole agent

CALIFORNIA - The California prison system's inspector general says a parole agent endangered fellow law enforcement officers when he fired a shot at a fleeing parolee last year. The inspector general's investigation found that other officers were in the line of fire when the agent chased and shot at the parolee outside a Stockton hotel in May 2007. The shot missed everyone.

Inspector General David Shaw also faulted the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for clearing the parole agent of wrongdoing within 24 hours. Shaw says the agent shouldn't have been chasing the fleeing parolee because agents were there merely to provide surveillance. Read more.
